Pack lighter or pay more: United Airlines is raising checked bag fees. Air travel costs continue to rise as United Airlines joins other carriers in raising checked bag fees. Effective February 24th, travelers on domestic United Airlines flights will pay an additional $5 for their first checked bag, bringing the total cost to $40. This increase follows similar trends across the industry, highlighting the growing financial burden placed on passengers for services that were once included in the base ticket price.
The fee increase applies to most flights within North America, according to a United Airlines spokesperson. This isn’t the first time United has adjusted checked bag fees; in 2020, they raised the airport fee by $5 to $35, keeping the pre-paid option at $30.
Adding to the trend, American Airlines recently raised their checked bag fees for domestic flights. The new cost is $35 if purchased in advance and $40 at the airport, up from $30 for both options. Similar increases were also implemented by JetBlue and Alaska Airlines earlier this year.
