OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and COO Brad Lightcap recently met with major production studios in the movie industry to discuss Sora. According to a report by The Financial Times, attendees from the movie industry at this meeting included representatives from Paramount, Universal, and Warner Bros.
The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the release of Sora with key stakeholders in the movie industry. Sora was unveiled in February this year and gained massive attention because of its capabilities when it comes to creating lifelike videos in just a few minutes with a single prompt. Its release raised concerns in the creative industry as many feared it could significantly impact the movie production process, potentially replacing many people jobless.
However, Sam Altman reassured players in the movie industry that the technology would not harm but rather assist their industry when well utilized. Some executives at the meeting were receptive to the technology, believing it could help them reduce costs and production time. Despite this, there are still skeptics regarding Sora’s impact such as filmmaker Tyler Perry, who suspended the expansion of his production studio amidst concerns about AI disruptions.
Sora is not officially available to the general public yet, so it is hard to determine how much of an impact it will create before it gets into the hands of everyday consumers. OpenAI has not communicated an official release date for Sora, probably because they are still ensuring it is safe and ready before releasing it to the public.
