Effective April 1, 2025, Zelle has phased out its standalone app for sending and receiving money. Users are now directed to use Zelle through their bank or credit union’s mobile app or online banking platform.
This transition, outlined in an October 31, 2024, blog post, reflects the widespread integration of Zelle into over 2,200 financial institutions.
Zelle recommends that users verify their bank’s Zelle availability on its website and enroll through their financial institution. Users already accessing Zelle through their bank’s app will experience no changes.
Payment history will be available within the standalone Zelle app until August 11, 2025, but will not be migrated to bank-integrated Zelle.
The standalone Zelle app, initially launched to serve users without bank integration, saw a decline in usage, accounting for only 2% of transactions by October 2024. Following the phase-out, the app will transition to a resource for scam and fraud education and a directory of participating banks and credit unions.
Zelle reported surpassing $1 trillion in transaction volume in 2024, emphasizing its significant role in peer-to-peer payments. Denise Leonhard, General Manager of Zelle, highlighted the trust placed in the platform by millions of users.
