Like most of its tech competitors, Google is moving fast when integrating AI capabilities into its products. At their recent Checkup event focused on health technology, Google announced it would introduce “Personal AI” capabilities across its products, including Fitbit, using generative AI advancements. They aim to make it easier for users to interact with these products and understand the insights they offer more easily.

The “Personal AI” capabilities will be experimented with by a few Fitbit users with access to Fitbit Labs later this year. At the CheckUp event, Google emphasized its vision of making it easy for users to understand the wellness data collected by smartwatches and smartphones. With the new “Personal AI” coming to Fitbit (one of their health platforms), users will now be able to make more sense of the data the Fitbit app collects from sensors on the Fitbit watches.

The updated Fitbit app will have an AI tool under the hood that assesses wellness data and presents it in a format that anyone, including non-techies, can easily understand. The app will also provide actionable insights that users can click on to learn more about how to improve their health.

These new “Personal AI” capabilities will allow users to interact with a chatbot to gain more detailed insights. They will do this by asking questions about the data the app is displaying. For instance, one could ask if their bad sleeping habits are related to their daily activities and how they can improve. Ultimately, this will make the data in the Fitbit app more relevant and usable to more people than ever before.

Google’s Personal Health Large Language Model (LLM) is the AI model that will power these new capabilities. This new LLM is a slightly tweaked Gemini version focusing on health AI features. However, Google emphasized that Fitbit’s new AI capabilities are not meant for medical diagnosis or treatment but to assist users in reaching their fitness goals and better understand their health.

In addition to the Fitbit platform, “Personal AI” capabilities will be available on several other Google products, including Pixel phones, Pixel Watch wearables, and Pixel earbuds. So, if you have a Google Pixel phone or watch, you will soon have access to these capabilities.
