In a research note shared by investment bank Haitong and reported by MacRumors, Apple analyst Jeff Pu supported the rumor that the “iPhone 17 Air” will be around 6mm thick. “We agree with the recent chatter about an ultra-slim, 6mm-thick iPhone 17 Slim model,” he said.
If true, the iPhone 17 Air would become Apple’s thinnest iPhone yet, beating the iPhone 6’s 6.9mm thickness record. It would also be about three-quarters the thickness of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models.
While some might wish for an even thinner design, the size of the battery and other components sets a limit. Still, at 6mm, the iPhone 17 Air would feel sleek and lightweight compared to recent bulkier iPhones. However, it wouldn’t be Apple’s thinnest product. That title goes to the 2024 13-inch iPad Pro, which measures just 5.1mm thick. The last iPod nano was also thinner at 5.4mm.
Rumors suggest the iPhone 17 Air will feature a completely redesigned, thinner build, though the final name is unknown. Pu calls it the “iPhone 17 Slim,” while others refer to it as the “iPhone 17 Air.”
There are mixed reports about the phone’s specs, but many agree on a 6.6-inch display. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted the device would feature an A19 chip, a Dynamic Island, a single rear camera, and Apple’s first in-house 5G modem.
Jeff Pu also expects the iPhone 17 Air to include an aluminum frame, Face ID, a 48-megapixel rear camera, a 24-megapixel front camera, 8GB of RAM, and advanced AI features.
The iPhone 17 Air is expected to launch in September 2025, but with over a year until its release, details may still change.
