With Europe leading the charge in online privacy, Google Chrome is testing a new feature for Android that makes logging in easier and safer: Digital Credentials.

Google Chrome is constantly testing new features, and some of them appear first in the Canary channel, an experimental version for developers. This channel allows developers and enthusiasts to try out upcoming features before they’re released to the public. One recently spotted flag, called ‘#web-identity-digital-credentials,’ suggests it might enable a new login system that uses digital credentials.

Digital Credentials let your phone wallet securely handle logins. You can choose what information to share, like your age, making online verification smoother and safer everywhere.

The urgency behind testing Digital Credentials stems from the EU’s eIDAS regulation. Effective by 2026, this law requires large platforms like Google to accept these credentials. eIDAS aims to enhance electronic transaction security and ensure digital identities and signatures are recognized across all EU member states.

In anticipation, Google is implementing changes like the Privacy Sandbox initiative and this update to Chrome for Android, paving the way for a more secure and standardized login experience.

According to the flag description, Google is testing this feature first on Android phones and plans to bring it to other platforms like Chrome on desktops (Mac, Linux, ChromeOS, and Windows).
