Microsoft is enhancing Notepad in Windows 11 with a fresh dose of AI. The latest update (v. 11.2410.15.0) adds a “rewrite” feature, allowing users to select text and get three alternative versions with customizable tone and length. This feature also keeps previous text versions for easy reversal, and it can be disabled in Settings. Currently, it’s available to Windows Insiders.
This “rewrite” tool is a rebranded version of the former “Cowriter” feature that lets users paraphrase text with limited credits. Microsoft’s frequent use of the “co-” prefix (e.g., “Copilot” and “Cocreator” in Paint) can be a bit confusing, but the functionality remains the same.
Microsoft also reports a 35%-55% improvement in Notepad’s startup speed, making it faster for most users. Additionally, the Paint app now includes new AI features, such as generative fill and erase, which are available to Windows Insiders on Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon processors.
