What’s crackin’, Apple? The Vision Pro has stood out as one of Apple’s most intriguing products since the launch of the iPad almost 14 years ago. It has gained much attention, even outside the tech community, due to the memes and reviews surrounding it. However, a few early users have noticed some issues with this headset. One of these issues is that the front glass (eyesight screen) cracks more easily than anticipated, with some reporting mysterious cracks appearing on their devices.
The cracking issue
Several users on Reddit have reported experiencing cracks on their Vision Pro devices without any apparent physical impact. One user mentioned always using a front protection cover when storing the device, yet the crack still appeared unexpectedly. Two other users on the same thread shared similar experiences of having hairline cracks in the middle of the front glass.
The sad news is that one user who contacted Apple was advised to replace the front screen at their cost since Apple hasn’t acknowledged this as a manufacturing issue yet. Replacing this glass without Apple Care is $799, adding to the users’ frustration.
Possible causes
There could be several causes of the mysterious cracking of Apple Vision Pro front glass, but here are two of the most likely ones:
- Stress on the Bridge of the Nose: When strapping the Vision Pro onto the face using either the Solo Knit Band or the Dual Loop Band, stress may be exerted on the glass as the headbands are tightened. Tightening could create unanticipated stress on the front glass, leading to cracks after wearing the headset several times.
- Overheating: The Vision Pro is equipped with a powerful M3 chip, which, despite its efficiency, generates heat, especially during demanding tasks. If the production process did not thoroughly test the device’s ability to dissipate this heat, it could cause the front glass to crack under thermal stress.
Apple’s response to the glass cracking
Apple has not formally acknowledged the reported problem with the Vision Pro front glass cracking. They will likely need to gather more user feedback before addressing the issue officially. While awaiting Apple’s response, affected users should promptly contact the company to ensure their cases are documented and to receive appropriate support or guidance. This will also help Apple better understand the scope and potential causes of the problem before offering potential solutions.
