Val Kilmer, 65, known for “Top Gun” and “Batman Forever,” died of pneumonia on April 1, his daughter Mercedes Kilmer confirmed to The New York Times. He had recovered from throat cancer diagnosed in 2014.
Kilmer’s final film appearance was in 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” where he shared an emotional scene with Tom Cruise. Cruise praised Kilmer’s return, highlighting their decades-long friendship.
Kilmer publicly discussed his throat cancer in 2017, revealing the impact on his voice and breathing. Earlier health concerns, including hospitalizations and rumors of tumors, were often downplayed by Kilmer.
In 2021, the documentary “Val,” produced with his children, premiered at Cannes, detailing his recovery.
Born in 1959, Kilmer’s career began after attending Juilliard. He rose to fame in “Top Gun” and starred as Jim Morrison in “The Doors.” He was married to Joanne Whalley from 1988 to 1996, with whom he had two children.
He is survived by Mercedes and Jack Kilmer.
