For the first time in the iPad’s history, Apple did not release a new model for a full calendar year (2023), which disappointed many fans. According to Bloomberg, Apple plans to release a few models, including the iPad Pro, in May.
For several months, many expected Apple to hold a March event to announce these iPads and the M3 MacBook Air models. However, with the MacBook Airs announced via a press release in the first week of March, a full-on Apple event before WWDC seems unlikely. Mark Gurman, a Bloomberg reporter and one of the most reliable Apple news sources, has revealed that his sources say the new iPads, including the Airs and Pros are set to be released in May.
The iPad Pros (11-inch and 13-inch) will reportedly have a new OLED screen, a much faster M3 chip, improved cameras, and various other upgrades. The iPad Airs, on the other hand, may have the M2 chip and upgrade from the current M1. However, they will have two size options: the current 11-inch and the all-new 12.9-inch version. Rumors also suggest Apple raise the price of the iPad Pros by $200 to $500.
Apple hopes these new iPads will help reverse the decline in iPad sales over the past few years. They believe the larger-screened iPad Air and the significantly improved OLED displays on the iPad Pros will entice users with older models to upgrade. Whether this strategy is successful will remain to be seen after the iPads are released.
