Recently, Tesla raised the range estimates for its popular Model Y and Model 3, making them even more appealing. These changes usually happen after new EPA range tests replace Tesla’s strict estimates. For example, Tesla paused Model Y AWD deliveries until the latest EPA test confirmed a longer range.
With the new Model 3 Highland update, Tesla focused on efficiency gains, especially for the Long Range (LR) model. Now, if a Model 3 LR buyer chooses the $1,000 upgrade to 19-inch Nova wheels instead of the standard 18-inch Photon wheels, they’ll get an extra 11 miles of range.
Previously, Tesla estimated the Model 3 LR with Nova wheels to be 305 miles per charge. Now, that estimate has increased to 316 miles for the Nova wheels with all-season tires, which is good news for buyers who prefer the stylish 19-inch wheels. They tend to use more energy due to their larger size than the 18-inch Photons.
The range difference between the two wheel types was quite large in the past—up to 41 miles, according to the EPA. Now, that gap is smaller, though Tesla hasn’t explained if any tire or testing changes led to this welcome boost.
