U.S. gamers hoping to secure a Nintendo Switch 2 through early preorders will have to wait longer than expected, as the company announced Friday a delay directly linked to President Trump’s new tariffs.
Nintendo stated that the planned April 9, 2025 preorder start is on hold while they evaluate the potential cost increases and market shifts caused by the tariffs. While the console’s June 5 launch is still planned, this decision raises concerns about the final price consumers will pay.
The tariffs, announced just two days prior, include substantial duties on Vietnam and Cambodia – key manufacturing locations for Nintendo – as well as Japan and China.
The Switch 2, revealed this week with a base price of $449.99 and exciting new features like mouse capability and 4K/120fps visuals, is the successor to the popular original Switch.
Experts predict that video game consoles could see price hikes of around 40% if tariffs remain in place, potentially adding hundreds of dollars to the cost for consumers.
