John Wick: Chapter 5 is officially in development with Keanu Reeves returning, and an animated prequel focusing on the legendary “Impossible Task” is on the horizon.
Lionsgate revealed the animated film will explore John Wick’s past, depicting his brutal quest to eliminate all rivals in a single night, freeing him from the High Table to be with Helen. Vanessa Taylor (Game of Thrones, The Shape of Water) is writing, and Shannon Tindle (Ultraman: Rising) will direct. Chad Stahelski, co-producer and live-action director, expressed his enthusiasm for anime’s potential to expand the John Wick universe.
Adding to the franchise’s expansion, Donnie Yen will star in and direct a spin-off centered on his character, Caine. Mattson Tomlin (The Batman Part II) is penning the script, with filming set to begin this summer. This follows the previously announced spin-off, Ballerina, arriving in June.
“The John Wick films have set an immensely high standard,” Yen stated, “and I’m thrilled to further elevate the franchise.” Stahelski praised Yen’s understanding of the world and action, calling him the perfect director for a “modern day kung-fu classic.”
