After a disappointing theatrical release, The Flash finds redemption with a strong start on Netflix. Debuting at #2 on Netflix’s Top 10 movies (according to ComicBook.com), The Flash sped past expectations. Only the streamer’s original thriller, Trigger Warning, managed to outrun the superhero film. The Flash arrived on Netflix on June 25th after a disappointing run on HBO Max, where it attracted record-low viewership numbers.
Despite a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and praise from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, The Flash’s box office performance fell short, grossing $271.3 million against a $220 million budget. While many found it enjoyable, the film received criticism for its third act and visual effects. However, the movie has found new life on Netflix, debuting at #2 on the streaming service’s Top 10 movie chart.
The Flash’s box office performance was hampered by controversies surrounding Ezra Miller. During post-production, Miller’s legal troubles generated negative press for the DCEU film, prompting Warner Bros. to consider delaying its release or even recasting Barry Allen. Despite these challenges, The Flash premiered last June with positive reviews from screenings, and some in Hollywood, including Zack Snyder, defended Miller.
The Flash’s future in the newly revamped DC Universe under James Gunn remains uncertain. Speculation mounted earlier this year regarding Arrowverse’s Grant Gustin potentially taking on the role, but only time will tell. In the meantime, The Flash is now streaming on Netflix.
