Robert Downey Jr. recently appeared on the “On With Kara Swisher” podcast, where he issued a strong warning to Hollywood in the age of AI: “I intend to sue all future executives” who authorize a digital replica of him.

The Oscar-winning actor made it clear he does not want his likeness used on-screen through AI or deepfake technology. The discussion came up in connection with his time as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but Downey expressed confidence that Marvel would not recreate his Tony Stark character using AI.

“There are two tracks,” Downey said when asked about digital recreations. “How do I feel about everything that’s going on? Minimally, because I have an actual emotional life that doesn’t leave much room for that.” He added that he trusts Marvel’s decision-makers and isn’t concerned about them using AI to “hijack” his character.

When Swisher suggested that future Hollywood executives might digitally recreate him, Downey responded, “You’re right. That’s why I’m stating here that I’ll sue all future executives just on principle.” Swisher noted that he may not be around to do so, to which Downey replied, “But my law firm will still be very active.”

Downey is currently tackling the topic of AI on Broadway in the play “McNeal,” which critiques corporate giants like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. He expressed skepticism about tech leaders, saying, “The idea that these start-ups own this new phase of the information age is a fallacy. It’s a massive error when they try to position themselves as arbiters of this space while needing to be seen in a favorable light.”

As for his return to Marvel, Downey confirmed he won’t be reprising Tony Stark in digital form. Instead, he’ll play the villainous Doctor Doom in 2026’s “Avengers: Doomsday.”
