Apple Original Films announced Wednesday that a sequel to its action-comedy hit, The Family Plan, is in the works. The original cast, including Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan, will return. This time, the Morgan family heads to Europe for a “holiday-themed European adventure,” promising plenty of festive action.
While the first Family Plan dominated Apple TV+ viewership, it didn’t fare well with critics, earning a 27% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the audience was more favorable, giving it a 61% rating. Now, Apple aims to follow up on the film’s success with a sequel set in Europe, where the Morgans’ Christmas vacation will be anything but peaceful.
Wahlberg will reprise his role as Dan Morgan, the family man with a secret past, and also serve as producer. He shared his excitement for the sequel, stating, “Making The Family Plan and seeing it connect with global audiences has been incredibly rewarding.
Michelle Monaghan, along with co-stars Zoe Colletti and Van Crosby, will return to maintain the core family dynamic that resonated with audiences. Simon Cellan Jones, who directed the original, is back to helm the sequel from a script by David Coggeshall.
This sequel announcement strengthens Apple’s growing partnership with Skydance Media. Other upcoming projects include The Gorge, starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy, and Fountain of Youth, featuring Natalie Portman and John Krasinski. Apple TV+ has also recently seen success with films like Wolfs, starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, and The Instigators, featuring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck.
