Video platform giant Tiktok has expanded into the virtual reality technology realm. The ByteDance platform recently launched a native app that’s been redesigned ‘from the ground up’ for Apple’s new headset, Apple Vision Pro.
Watch, sing and do more on Vision Pro
With this redesign, Vision Pro users can watch singing cats and GRWM clips on a more user-friendly interface. The videos and their likes, comments, favorites, and share buttons will still appear vertically as they do on mobile phones, but the added screen space is utilized to the fullest. On Apple devices, comment sections and creator profiles are placed on a separate pane to the right side of the video, ensuring users a more decluttered viewing area.
This also means that users can now watch a video while scrolling through comments without the view being obscured, unlike on the mobile app. All these while users can still pay attention to their surrounding area, visible on the interface’s background. This is pretty much as close we can get to being inside Iron Man’s suit for the time being!
Big tech giants entering the VR space
TikTok joins a growing number of tech giants entering the foray of Apple’s VR ambition. Disney has enabled streaming 3D movies from its Disney+ app on the device. Amazon Prime Video, Paramount Plus, Mubi, and Discovery Plus also follow suit with their own native Vision Pro apps. Several still held back; notably, Netflix and YouTube have yet to launch compatible players for the gadgets, telling users to watch their content via Safari instead.
Time will tell if their stances remain, but as of now, Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing Greg Joswiak has revealed that there are more than 1,000 apps designed specifically to cater to Vision Pro, including from rival companies like Zoom and Microsoft 365.
