Meta has reportedly scrapped its plans to develop a high-end mixed-reality headset that would compete directly with Apple’s Vision Pro.
According to a report by The Information, Meta told employees to stop working on the headset, which was codenamed La Jolla, and was expected to launch in 2027. The reason for the cancellation is the high cost of the MicroOLED displays the headset would have used, the same type found in the Vision Pro.
Meta’s CTO, Andrew Bosworth, commented on the decision, saying, “We develop many prototypes, but not all make it to production. We move forward with some and pass on others.” He emphasized that such decisions are common and shouldn’t be seen as a major setback.
Despite Bosworth’s comments, the cancellation of La Jolla adds to the challenges Meta faces in its VR projects. If released, the headset would have been expensive due to the costly MicroOLED displays.
