Ford is launching its own branded adapter to allow EV owners access to Tesla Superchargers. This new adapter, manufactured by EV equipment supplier Lectron, will be available alongside Tesla’s original adapter, which Ford has offered as a temporary solution.
Lectron, known for its “Vortex” NACS-to-CCS adapters, previously recalled some due to a design flaw that could cause them to unlatch while charging. However, Lectron’s CEO, Christopher Maiwald, confirmed in an interview that the issue has since been resolved.
Ford’s PR representative, Eddie Fernandez, clarified to The Verge that this new adapter is unrelated to earlier adapters flagged for replacement. He added that the previous replacements only impacted a small portion of adapters supplied.
Tesla has faced delays in producing enough adapters for automakers committed to adopting the NACS connector (also known as SAE J3400). In the meantime, Ford has encountered slow-charging issues with certain adapters and advised some customers to await replacements.
Ford leads the industry by offering EV customers free access to Tesla’s Supercharger network with complementary NACS-to-CCS adapters. Rivian follows suit, while Volvo and Polestar sell adapters for $230 and GM at $225.
Additionally, Ford recently launched the “Power Promise” campaign, providing free home chargers with standard installation to help potential EV buyers ease into the transition.
