A California judge has tentatively allowed nearly 6,000 Black workers at Tesla’s California factory to proceed with a class-action lawsuit alleging the company failed to address racial discrimination.
Judge Noël Wise granted class-action status, saying Tesla’s alleged failure to stop discrimination was a shared experience among Black workers at the Fremont plant.
In 2017, Tesla worker Marcus Vaughn filed a lawsuit alleging a hostile work environment at the Fremont factory. The lawsuit claimed that Black workers faced routine racist behavior from colleagues and supervisors, and that complaints to human resources were ignored.
Tesla denied these allegations in a blog post, stating they had fired three employees following investigations into the incidents. As of Wednesday, Tesla representatives have not responded to requests for comment on the recent ruling. (Vaughn v. Tesla, Inc., RG17882082, filed in California Superior Court, Alameda County.)
