Google Pay is merging with Google Wallet in the U.S. Google announced on February 23 that the standalone Google Pay app in the U.S. will be discontinued on June 4, 2024. However, the Google Pay app will continue to operate as usual in India and Singapore.

Google Wallet, a mobile wallet app for Android, will replace the standalone Google Pay app by June 2024. This decision comes as Google Wallet boasts five times the user base and offers broader functionality, including tap-to-pay, digital I.D.s, and public transit passes. While Google Pay will remain available in India and Singapore, U.S. users will seamlessly transition their payment information to Google Wallet for a unified experience.

Google has a history of streamlining its product portfolio, sometimes by merging services or discontinuing those with lower adoption. This includes past products like Jamboard, Stadia, and Google Play Music.

While you can still utilize the app’s full functionality until June 4, 2024, including sending and receiving money, planning ahead is important. You can quickly transfer any remaining funds from your Google Pay account to your bank account via the Google Pay website. After that date, the app will transition to Google Wallet, meaning the ability to send or request money directly through Google Pay will end.
