Here we go again. But now, it’s nutty.

Peanut the squirrel (Pnut) gained Instagram fame, with around 500,000 followers, before being seized by New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). Since then, the account has grown to over 750,000 followers.

Peanut’s owner, Mark Longo, was reported for allegedly keeping animals in unsafe conditions. Both Peanut and a raccoon named Fred were euthanized to test for rabies after an investigator involved in the seizure was bitten.

Longo has set up a GoFundMe, currently at $193,950 with a $250,000 goal. Initially intended for legal fees, the funds are now aimed at supporting P’Nuts Freed Farm Animal Sanctuary.

Interestingly, top donations reference meme coins like a $6,800 contribution from a Peanut-themed coin and another $4,000 from the FREEDOM coin.

Elon Musk has weighed in, posting about Peanut on X and encouraging fans to “vote for Peanut” on his recent Joe Rogan podcast appearance. TMZ also debunked a supposed statement from Donald Trump about Peanut, which seemed to hype interest in the meme coins even more.
