The world’s largest search engine, Google, used AI to Block or remove about 5.5 billion advertisements from its platform in 2023.

Google’s 2023 Ads Safety Report states that generative AI significantly enhanced all enforcement aspects and performed vital roles, such as tracking misuse patterns and international disputes.

Google claimed to have blocked and deleted almost 5.5 billion ads in 2023—a modest increase over the previous year—and 12.7 million ad accounts—nearly twice as many as the year before. Similarly, Google said that it has prohibited the display of advertising on over 2.1 billion publisher pages—a modest increase from 2022.

“Overall, we blocked or removed 206.5 million advertisements for violating our misrepresentation policy, which includes many scam tactics, and 273.4 million advertisements for violating our financial services policy and abusing the ad network,” said Duncan Lennox, Google’s vice president and general manager of ads privacy and safety.

Any advertiser or publisher who believes we made a mistake may still challenge such enforcement action. After reviewing it, our teams will utilize the information to enhance our systems if any problems are discovered, Google said.

Lennox claims that the battle against fraudulent advertisements is never-ending. Google observes that scammers are becoming more sophisticated and large-scale in their operations. They use novel strategies like deepfakes to trick users, and dishonest individuals continuously refine their exploits of digital advertising to deceive consumers and genuine companies.
