At Apple’s WWDC earlier this year, one big highlight was Siri’s next evolution in the age of AI. However, many promised upgrades still haven’t arrived, and what’s currently available isn’t exactly groundbreaking.
Apple’s major upgrade, dubbed “LLM Siri,” is reportedly in the works. According to Bloomberg, this new version will use advanced AI to enable more natural, back-and-forth conversations and handle complex queries, similar to tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. The revamped Siri is expected to launch in Spring 2026, with an announcement in 2025.
While the potential is exciting, it’s hard to ignore how far behind Siri feels compared to rivals. Tools like ChatGPT and Gemini already offer conversational AI features on iPhones. Google’s Gemini app even integrates with Gmail and Docs, bringing users advanced AI assistance right now. Meanwhile, Microsoft-backed OpenAI continues to innovate with ChatGPT Search and is reportedly working on a web browser.
Apple plans to support more third-party AI models through its Apple Intelligence bundle, including ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. However, as competitors refine their AI offerings and expand integration with apps and services, Apple’s progress with Siri feels slow.
One promising feature of “LLM Siri” is the ability to interact with third-party apps. This means users could get precise control over apps using Siri, a long-requested feature. While this is exciting, the timeline still puts Apple over a year behind in delivering these capabilities.
Clearly, Apple is moving in the right direction with “LLM Siri,” but the competition is advancing rapidly. Unfortunately, when Siri catches up, other platforms may have set an even higher bar for conversational AI.
