Elon Musk is suing OpenAI, its CEO Sam Altman, and potentially others, alleging they have abandoned the company’s founding mission of developing artificial intelligence “for the benefit of humanity broadly.”

The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI’s prioritization of profit for Microsoft violates their founding agreement. It seeks to compel them to return to their original mission of developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the benefit of humanity, not for the personal gain of the defendants or Microsoft.

Musk claims that in 2015, he was approached by OpenAI’s co-founders, Sam Altman, and Greg Brockman, to establish a non-profit research lab focused on developing artificial general intelligence for the betterment of humanity. Though a co-founder of OpenAI in 2015, Musk left the board in 2018, having previously warned about the potential dangers of AI.

Microsoft declined to comment and OpenAI was not immediately available for comment. More to come on this.
