Following the Vision Pro release, reports suggest Apple continues exploring foldable devices. The Information details their development of “at least two” iPhone prototypes with horizontal folding mechanisms, resembling Samsung’s Z Flip series.

We may need to wait longer, as sources tell The Information it’s not planned for mass production in 2024 or 2025. While Apple reportedly envisioned double-sided displays, The Information reports engineering challenges related to durability caused complications.

Adding to the challenges, engineers want a foldable as thin as current iPhones, but batteries and displays pose hurdles. Despite this, Apple reportedly explored parts manufacturing with an Asian firm for various foldable sizes.

Staying on foldables, reports continue to circulate regarding a foldable iPad. The Information claims Apple is developing an 8-inch tablet reminiscent of the iPad Mini, with engineers working to mitigate the display crease and create a flat-folding hinge. Despite no confirmed release date, The Elec mentions a potential 7-8 inch device in 2026-2027.
