In recent months, numerous iPhone 14 Plus users have reported an issue on Reddit and Apple’s official forums where the camera app displays a black screen instead of a preview. Apple has launched a free repair program for affected devices responding to these complaints.

According to Apple, “a very small percentage of iPhone 14 Plus devices may exhibit no preview” in the rear camera, with affected units manufactured between April 10, 2023, and April 28, 2024.

iPhone 14 Plus owners who were impacted can now receive a free repair by visiting an Apple Store, an authorized service provider, or using Apple’s mail-in service. The issue appears to vary, with some users experiencing a black screen only on the primary camera, while others report both the main and ultrawide sensors failing or even the front camera preview going blank.

User reports highlight the frustration, with one Reddit post stating, “The front camera works fine, but the back isn’t responding—it’s just a black screen.” Attempts to fix it via hard resets or software updates have been unsuccessful. Another user on Apple’s forum shared, “I just bought the phone, set it up, and the front camera is completely black.”

Despite earlier hopes for a software fix, Apple’s latest update confirms it as a hardware-level issue. If you’re experiencing similar camera problems, check if your device qualifies for a free repair by entering your serial number on Apple’s support page.
