Spotify has expanded its AI DJ feature to include Spanish, making it the first language option outside of English. On Tuesday, Spotify announced the launch of this Spanish-speaking AI DJ, confirming earlier reports from TechCrunch. Like the original AI DJ “X,” based on Spotify employee Xavier “X” Jernigan, the Spanish voice is modeled after Olivia “Livi” Quiroz Roa, a senior music editor at Spotify in Mexico City.
Launched last year, Spotify’s AI DJ serves as a smart audio guide that introduces music with a realistic voice. This feature is not just an experiment with new AI technology; it’s a strategy to boost music consumption on the app. According to Spotify, users of the AI DJ listen to a lot more music, with usage growing by over 200% in the past year.
The AI DJ is built using technologies from OpenAI and Sonantic, an AI voice platform Spotify acquired in 2022. DJ X’s voice was initially modeled after Xavier Jernigan, incorporating his slang and expressions to create a familiar sound.
Olivia “Livi” Quiroz Roa was chosen as the newest voice after an extensive casting call. Spotify found that her voice resonated the most with listeners, who said it felt like getting music recommendations from a friend. With the launch of “Livi,” DJ X will still be available, allowing users to choose their preferred AI DJ.
Spotify Premium subscribers can access “Livi” by navigating to the Search tab in the app. Simply search for “DJ” and press play to start using the feature. To switch languages, tap the three-dot menu in the DJ card and select either English or Spanish.
