What if you and your spouse are undercover hitmen tasked with assassinating each other? That is the juicy premise of the 2005 spy action comedy Mr & Mrs Smith. Nowadays, the film is best remembered for kickstarting co-stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s romance. But we’d like to remind you that it’s also a silly, sexy romp with tons of mindless fun— a perfect pick to unwind on a Friday night.
The plot revolves around two highly skilled assassins, John Smith and Jane Smith—played by Pitt and Jolie, respectively—who meet and fall in love, unaware of each other’s true occupation. A few years into their marriage, their relationship hits a snag. As they begin seeing a marriage counselor, things get shaken up when the two are tasked with killing each other. In comedic, high-octane hijinks, the two must choose between their feelings and professional duties.

The film relies heavily on the natural chemistry between its charismatic leads. Jolie and Pitt’s budding romance truly spilled onto the screen, every scene between them crackling with so much sexual tension. That aside, the film also features powerhouse action sequences that the two actors, no stranger to action roles, ate up with panache. The “spies in love” concept is nothing new – True Lies and Bond movies did it first – but this film freshens up the old trope with a compelling central love story and endlessly witty dialogues.
The film is directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) and features Adam Brody, Vince Vaughn, and Kerry Washington in supporting roles. At a concise 110-minute run, the film is well-paced and thoroughly entertaining. The PG-13 rating might’ve robbed us of a truly sexy espionage flick, but the Jolie-Pitt charisma is enough to make up for it. All in all, it’s a recommended Friday night watch.
You can stream Mr & Mrs Smith on Hulu and Prime Video.
